Fluoride, once considered to be a useful substance required by the body in traces, has now been proven to affect the body in adverse ways. It can be found in almost everything you come in contact with including toothpaste, water, and antibiotics. So avoiding contact is almost impossible. Growing Concerns about Fluoride
The neurotoxic properties of fluoride have been a matter of concern among scientists for several decades. Even the masses are now wary of getting exposed to this substance. People in the U.S. and in many other parts of the world are beginning to mobilize local level movements to have the use of fluoride banned in their drinking water.
Fluoride has received a bad name of decades. It has been studied for its properties that affect IQ and human intelligence development. It is rumored that it was first used to sanitize drinking water by the Nazis and Russians. The substance has also been associated with increasing the rate of calcification within the pineal gland.
Study Proves Fluoride’s Damaging Effects on Brain
The Pharmacognosy Magazine has released a new study that supports the widespread distrust for fluoride that it affects the brain in damaging ways. The research also mentions a spice-based, natural solution to the different harmful effects of this substance. The published report has been titled as “Curcumin attenuates neurotoxicity induced by fluoride: An in vivo evidence.”
The research was conducted by scientists from the M.L. Sukhadia University of India. The researchers at the university’s Zoology Department studied the neurodegenerative affects of fluoride on mammals. In particular, the study focused on how it affected the cells in the cerebral cortex and hippocampus.
Contents of the Research Study on Fluoride
The report by the scientists at the university addressed the concerns about fluoride from the past. Fluoride is one of the earliest inorganic ions to have gained so much attention from scientists. Today the toxic effects of the compound spread through drinking water are well known throughout the world. In fact, exposure to it has been associated with a variety of diseases and conditions including cancers, health disease, problems of the reproductive system, and neurological conditions.
The researchers at the university focused at how fluoride’s neurotoxic properties worked. They studied 2 main factors leading to neuro-degeneration:
- Oxidative stress
People suffering from fluorosis have also been found to suffer from neuro-degeneration related to lipid peroxidation. Fluorosis affects the tooth enamel due to fluoride’s effects during the growing years. when lipid peroxidation is uncontrolled, it can cause significant reduction in brain phospholipids.
It is because of these neurodegenerative an neurotoxic affects of fluoride, the scientists at the M.L. Sukhadia University started with curcumin (the major polyphenol in turmeric) as the perfect ingredient to test as a neuro-protective compound. Studies conducted in the past show that curcumin can work as an antioxidant in multiple ways by providing protection against:
- Hydroxyl free radicals
- Singlet oxygen
- Damages due to superoxide radicals
It has also been considered to increase the generation of endogenous glutathione within the brain. This is a significant antioxidant that protects the brain.
The scientists studied the neurotoxicity of fluoride and tested how curcumin provided protection against it. The research was conducted on mice for 1 month. The mammals were categorized into 4 groups with the following attributes:
- Control group (without any fluoride)
- 120 ppm fluoride group – The group was administered the substance in distilled drinking water without any limitations.
- 120 ppm fluoride and 30mg per kg bodyweight curcumin group – Curcumin is given orally in olive oil and the fluoride is given in drinking water.
- 30mg per kg bodyweight curcumin group
The effects of the treatment were determined by measuring MDA (malondialdehyde) in the brains of the mice. Malondialdehyde has been used to determine oxidative damage or stress.
The researchers reported that the Group 2 (fluoride only) displayed higher level of MDA compared to the Group 1 (without any fluoride). The MDA levels were lower in Fluoride + Curcumin group compared to the Group 2. It’s demonstrated that curcumin has effective neuro-protective properties against the substance.
The researchers came to the conclusion that taking fluoride on a daily level caused noteworthy increase in lipid peroxidation and also affected neuron cells of the hippocampal areas, causing neuro-degeneration. On the other hand, taking curcumin helped in reducing the adverse effects of fluoride by boosting the body’s antioxidant defense. The scientists thus concluded that curcumin has therapeutic properties against neuro-degeneration caused by oxidative stress.
This was not just the first research of its kind to prove the brain-protective properties of curcumin. In fact, there are more than 200 verified research studies that have been published. And all of them indicate the neuro-protective properties of the ingredient.
