10 Common Habits that Damage Your Kidneys

The kidneys are important organs in our bodies because they are responsible for the filtration of body waste and extra water that runs through our bodies. Its primary function is for urination and though it is one of the most important set of organs in the body, millions of people have fatal results as the outcome of not properly taking care of their kidneys and suffering from kidney disease. There are many bad habits that contribute to the harm of our kidneys. Here are some tips to reverse some of the adverse effects on our kidneys.


1.Inadequate Water Intake

Many of us do not drink the recommended allowance of water daily and that is one of the major contributors to kidney functioning. Our kidneys actually eliminate the metabolic waste from our bodies and help to balance out erythrocytes. When the body is not properly hydrated, blood flow to the renal region then decreases which allows for an accumulation of harmful toxins in our blood.

2.Not ‘Going’ When Nature Calls

Sometimes we find that we are in a particular spot where we cannot go to the restroom when we need to so we try to hold it. However, this results in significant issues in the urinary tract system if the bladder remains full of urine for a long period of time. This can eventually lead to diverticula which can impact other bodily organs. As a result, urine pressure can increase, which is called hydronephrosis. This often is also caused by chronic back pressure upon our kidneys. The outcome is renal failure and possibly even dialysis.

3.Too Much Sodium Intake

Our kidneys also metabolize the amount of sodium the body intakes. The majority of sodium comes from salt that we eat. However, most of the salt must be excreted. Too much sodium causes the kidneys to work overtime and keeps it busier than our organs can handle. This can impact our kidneys in the long term by creating stress on them.

4.Too Much Caffeine Intake

Soda and soft drinks often contain too much caffeine and when you’re thirsty, sometimes those are the beverages we first choose. However, since many of these contain caffeine, we find that blood pressure can become elevated. As a result of high blood pressure, the kidneys are in distress and can become damaged.

5.Abuse of Painkillers

Many people have become addicted to painkillers and the addiction is just one adverse effect of taking these. Not only does this impact a person’s body overall by damaging multiple organs, but studies have concluded that long term use of pain pills reduces the flow of blood to the kidneys and causes the kidneys to not function efficiently.

6.Elevated Alcohol Consumption

Beer, wine, and liquor may be okay in moderation but for the long-term, too much alcohol is toxic to the kidneys. Too much intake of alcohol damages the kidneys by putting stress on the bean-shaped organs.

7.Elevated Protein Intake

Too much protein can severely damage your kidneys. Protein-rich diets and diets which include too much red meat can increase the likelihood for harmful effects on the kidneys. Typically a lot of protein in the diet is a good choice but for a person who already suffers from kidney damage, it can be extremely harmful. An elevation in protein in our diets puts the kidneys in overload mode by trying to eliminate the metabolic waste.

8.Smoking Tobacco

Every organ is negatively impacted by smoking tobacco, according to the Center for Disease Control. According to research, there is a strong correlation between smoking and disease of the kidneys.

9.Brushing Off a Cold or the Flu

It is common that people who have the habit to ignore a cold or the flu can be negatively impacted in their kidneys. Research has indicated that numerous people who have avoided rest while being sick has harmfully effected the person’s kidneys, resulting in disease.
